Description: Mexico notifies the publication of the "Amendment to the Agreement under which the Ministry of the Economy issues general rules and criteria in respect of foreign trade".

In accordance with the provisions of Article 10.1.1 of the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade, the Government of Mexico communicates that, on 1 October 2020, the Ministry of the Economy through the Directorate-General of Standards published the "Amendment to the Agreement under which the Ministry of the Economy issues general rules and criteria in respect of foreign trade" in the Official Journal.

The published text establishes the commercial and health information that must be contained in the labelling of the prepacked domestic or foreign products marketed on the national territory that are intended for final consumers. It also determines the characteristics of such information and establishes a system of front-of-pack labelling, which clearly and truthfully warns of the content of critical nutrients and ingredients presenting health risks in excessive consumption.

This Amendment entered into force on 1 October 2020, excluding the provisions of paragraphs 4.1 to 4.5.3.3, 4.6.1 to 4.82, Chapter 6, and paragraphs 7.1 to 7.1.2 of the Amendment to Mexican Official Standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010: General specifications for the labelling of pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages - Commercial and health information, published on 5 April 2010, which will enter into force on 1 April 2021.

This communication is being submitted for purposes of transparency and in order to provide Members with further information on the current regulatory process in Mexico.
